Garden Design

Our inspiration and knowledge of design comes from our 20 years experience of working in those high profile gardens around the country. A design for your garden is all about finding out what excites and inspires you horticulturaly. We aim to form a partnership with our clients and really listen to their requirements. Creating a garden that is original, inspiring and practical combines our love of design and our passion for plants. As part of the design process we will ask you about your favourite gardens to visit, show gardens that you may have seen and of course the style of planting you wish to grow.

Our Design Philosophy

Flower Border James Cox Garden DesignOne of the most important things for us is that the garden has to function well - both for you and the living environment around it. We aim to provide a design for your garden that will have a low environmental impact and will try to recycle as much of its natural waste each year into useful stuff like composts, liquid feeds and mulches, just like nature intended. This can really reduce your need to bring in materials that keep your soil healthy and plants well fed - reducing running costs for your garden and your carbon footprint in the process.

If you need convincing of this then take a visit to the Yeo Valley Organic Garden and see how an organic and naturally run garden can be full of fantastic design and healthy plants, ran virtually on a closed and self sufficient circuit.

New to Gardening?

If you are new to gardening or are unsure of what you really want from your garden we will advise on ways for you to create your own ideas and get a better understanding of what we may be proposing. This usually means that we will suggest that you visit a few of our favourite gardens - like Christopher Lloyds garden at Great Dixter or Piet Odolfs new garden at Hauser and wirth in Bruton. This can really help you gain Knowledge, inspiration and an understanding of what can be achieved in your garden.

We can also take you on visits to gardens that we have worked in and explain practically how the garden was designed and the build achieved.

How the Design process works

We provide a free initial consultation during which we ask question about what you want to achieve in your garden. Budgets and time scales are always important questions along with the design brief and we can advise on what is realistically achievable for your project. If you wish to proceed with a design, firstly we will put all the information into a written brief and draw up a couple of initial sketch ideas for the garden.

If you are then happy with the proposed ideas, we will draw up the full plan for your garden. There is a set fee for the initial sketch ideas - refundable from the cost of the overall design if you are happy to proceed.
